Miyako Koshikawa, Tomomi Matoba, and Fumi Tsubota have teamed up to create the warm and empowering female-centric romance series “Fishbowl Wives” from Ryo Kurosawa’s original manga. The story of the series follows Sakura Hiraga; a woman stuck in a failed marriage with her abusive husband. Although there is only glitter and sunshine from the start, Sakura feels suffocated and the rest of the story follows the course of her release. Five other wives who live in the same tower condo as Sakura experience their respective sexual awakenings in different story arcs. The show is packed with promiscuity and there are some visceral nude scenes in the mix. 7. “What’s the point?”

Near the end of the pilot, Takuya and Yuka have an encounter, shortly after Takuya’s fight with Yuriha. As Takuya indulges his physical urges in meaningless encounters, Sakura has a blast on the yacht with Haruko. At this moment, we realize the extent of Takuya’s sex addiction. In the meantime, his remark that there is no point in making love with a woman who cannot give birth illustrates his view of women and the world around him. One of the most graphic scenes and depicted against a crimson background, this brief scene sticks in the minds of the audience for a while.

6. Insecurity leads to infidelity

Insecurity leads to infidelity, at least in the case of Takuya Hiraga, the co-owner of the Hiraga Tokyo line of salons. The first episode, titled “The Fishbowl Wife”, sets the tone for the story from the very first moments, as Takuya and Yuriha try out different poses in Takuya’s empty apartment on the eve of Sakura’s birthday. We realize that Takuya and Sakura’s relationship is doomed, even though they seem quite the lovey-dovey couple in public. As we know ahead of time, we side with Sakura when she decides to leave her house.

5. Tattoos and scars

The seventh episode, titled “Thee Renovation Wife”, follows Yuriha’s life closely. Although we know about her affair with Takuya, we don’t know about her misfortunes. When her husband decides to bring his mother to their apartment, Yuriha is uncomfortable and asks for an extra bathroom. She uses a lot of makeup to hide the scar on her forehead, which takes a lot of time. Despite her negligent husband, Yuriha comes across a tattooed builder with a similar patch on his forehead. Yuriha actively tries to bond with him, sparks fly and they end up on the bed.

4. A needy ex

Yuka, from apartment 1612, believes in outsourcing all tax operations, both in her professional and personal life. In the second episode, titled “The Outsourcing Wife”, her married life isn’t going well either. She wants a child, but he’s not interested in touching her. After a call from her ex-boyfriend Jun, Yuka taps into her forbidden feelings. Jun takes her to a hotel and their dance eventually leads to Yuka becoming pregnant. This sequence is one of the most passionate and daring scenes depicted in the series that hits the right spot between romance and promiscuity.

3. Cuckold Gone Wrong

The show explores Noriko’s story in the 44-minute third part, titled “The Lunchbox Wife”. Her marriage to Taro seems to have lost its thrill. So, to spice up a few notches, Taro invites his colleague Tsuta to have an affair with Noriko. He gets jealous halfway through, asking Tsuta to leave and finishing the rest himself. However, Taro’s life changes when Noriko visits Tsuta at her apartment. Tsuta apologizes for the uncomfortable encounter, while Noriko can’t shake the thought of him touching her. They become comfortable under the sheets and Noriko’s life changes forever.

2. From current satisfaction to past trauma

In the fifth episode, titled “The Headache Wife part 1”, Hisako from apartment 4103 encounters the lonely Baba during a walk in the park. Baba takes Hisako to his modest abode, and Hisako reveals that her husband is staying away for work. Baba is also a self-proclaimed loner, and when Hisako goes to bed at the onset of a migraine, Baba seizes the moment with a kiss. Hisako leaves amidst a headache but later returns to satisfy her basic cravings. The sex comes out quite natural while hiding a twist in the middle. The reveal comes in the next episode, but the steamy first encounter gently sets us up to dive into Hisako’s past.

1. A happy ending

In the finality of events, Haruko and Sakura become involved and have a physical romance for the second time in the series. Their romance remains mostly spiritual for most of the story, and the slow-burning passion proves intimate and heartwarming. In the end, before they go their separate ways, they decide to give their romantic stint a happy ending. Haruko kisses Sakura passionately, and Sakura responds with a warm hug.
