Diane Hart and Vickie Brill grew up on a farm in Wisconsin. Vickie is the oldest of six children and Diane had a twin brother, Dean Wilson. In August 1994, Diane moved to the Upper Peninsula in Michigan and eventually settled in Ravenna, Michigan, with Gene Hart. They were married in 1996 and Diane’s two daughters from a previous relationship also lived there. The show mentioned that Vickie and her family moved in with the Harts after Vickie’s house burned down in September 2013.

At the time of the incident, Diane was working as a cashier at a local store. However, the relationship between Diane and Gene deteriorated over time; on November 11, 2013, she filed for divorce. According to the show, on November 8, Gene froze Diane from their joint bank accounts and credit cards. Gene went to the police two days later with a disturbing claim. He had heard from Dean that Diane was planning to kill him.

Authorities investigated the claim and found that Vickie had called Dean for killing Gene. Although he didn’t take her seriously at first, he was concerned when she went into more detail about it and when it would happen. So, Dean called Gene, who then went to the police. The police then mounted an undercover operation; Dean called Vickie and said he had a friend who could carry out the murder, and arranged a meeting. However, this was a police officer.

On November 13, 2013, around 1 p.m., Diane and Vickie met the undercover cop in a parking lot of a local shopping center. The two women discuss the murder with him and go into details about how it would happen. They wanted it to happen that same night and would leave the garage door open. The sisters discussed that Gene was shot in the face or chest in the garage. In the end, they gave the officer jewelry as a deposit and agreed to pay $5,000 later for the hit. Diane, then 45, and Vickie, then 50, were arrested the same day.

Authorities believed the motive was financial. According to the show, Gene’s 401k savings totaled about $300,000, and his life insurance policy was worth more than $200,000. Diane and Vickie did not plead for murder. In April 2014, Diane was sentenced to six to thirty years in prison. During the sentencing, she said, “Sorry about all this mess. I wish I hadn’t gotten drugs in it.” In June 2014, Vickie was handed the same sentence as her sister. Prison records show that both were released from prison in November 2020. Since then, the sisters have understandably kept a low profile, with their last known location being Ravenna, Michigan.
